What Is Telegram?
Telegram is a free, cloud-based messaging app with over 900 million active users in 2026. It’s known for its speed, security, massive group capacity (up to 200,000 members), and powerful bots. Whether you’re chatting with friends, following news channels, or running a business, Telegram has tools for everything.
This guide shows you exactly how to use Telegram — from installing the app to mastering its best features.
Step 1: Download and Install Telegram
Telegram is free and available on all platforms:
- iPhone/iPad: App Store → search “Telegram”
- Android: Google Play Store → search “Telegram”
- Windows/Mac/Linux: telegram.org → Download
- Web browser: web.telegram.org (no download needed)
Telegram syncs across all your devices automatically — start a chat on your phone, continue on your computer.
Step 2: Create Your Telegram Account
- Open Telegram and enter your phone number
- Enter the verification code sent via SMS
- Enter your first name (last name is optional)
- Add a profile photo (optional)
- Set a username (optional but recommended — lets people find you without sharing your number)
Tip: Set a username in Settings → Edit Profile → Username. This way, people can message you without knowing your phone number.
Step 3: Send Your First Message
Telegram chat is simple:
- Tap the pencil/compose icon to start a new chat
- Search for a contact or username
- Type your message and tap the send button
Message types you can send:
- Text — with formatting: bold, italic, code, strikethrough
- Photos and videos — up to 2 GB per file
- Voice messages — tap and hold the microphone icon
- Video messages — circular video notes
- Documents/Files — any file type up to 2 GB
- Stickers and GIFs — thousands of free sticker packs
- Location — share live location
- Polls — create instant polls in groups
Step 4: Join Telegram Groups
Telegram groups can have up to 200,000 members. They’re great for communities, teams, and clubs.
How to join a group:
- Via invite link: Someone shares a t.me/joinchat/… link — tap it to join
- Via username: Search @groupname in Telegram
- Via directory: Browse telegram-group.com to find groups by topic
How to create a group:
- Tap the pencil icon → New Group
- Select members to add
- Set a group name and photo
- Configure group settings (who can send messages, add members, etc.)
Step 5: Follow Telegram Channels
Channels are one-way broadcast tools — only admins can post, but anyone can follow. They’re used for news, entertainment, brands, and announcements.
- Search for a channel username (e.g., @BBCNews)
- Or tap an invite link to a channel
- Tap “Join” or “Subscribe”
Unlike groups, channels can have unlimited subscribers. You can mute channels so they don’t disturb you but still follow along.
Step 6: Use Telegram Bots
Bots are automated programs that add functionality to Telegram. They can remind you of tasks, play music, manage groups, translate text, and much more.
How to use a bot:
- Search for a bot username (e.g., @chatgpt_tfrbot)
- Tap “Start”
- Send /help to see available commands
Popular bots: @chatgpt_tfrbot (AI assistant), @Skeddy_bot (reminders), @MissRose_bot (group moderation).
Step 7: Set Up Privacy and Security
Telegram gives you strong privacy controls. Set them up in Settings → Privacy and Security:
- Phone number visibility: Set to “Nobody” — use your username instead
- Last seen & online: Set to “My Contacts” or “Nobody”
- Profile photo: Control who sees your photo
- Two-step verification: Add a password for extra account security (highly recommended)
- Active sessions: See and terminate sessions on other devices
- Passcode lock: Lock the app with a PIN or fingerprint
Step 8: Use Secret Chats
Regular Telegram chats are encrypted in transit but stored on Telegram’s servers. Secret Chats use end-to-end encryption and leave no trace on servers.
- Open a contact → tap their name → Start Secret Chat
- Messages self-destruct after a set time
- Screenshots are notified (on Android)
- Can’t be forwarded
